The Red Mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, is a unique addition to a saltwater aquarium. The Mangrove pod is suitable to be planted in sand, wedged in rock, or in sumps and refugiums. If given a proper amount of lighting, the roots should take hold of their surroundings shortly after being planted. The Mangrove plant can be beneficial in the aquarium as well as they can help lower nitrate and phosphate levels.
The Mangrove plant does not require excessive maintenance, only the occasional trim to control growth and wiping of excess salt from the leaves. If cared for properly, the Mangrove can be a fascinating plant to watch develop in your fresh, brackish, or saltwater tank – they could even be grown outside of the water as houseplants.
